Power House

The Homan Square Power House heated, cooled, and provided electricity to the sprawling Sears, Roebuck and Co. world headquarters on Chicago's West Side from 1905 until the company moved all operations downtown. The Power House continued to operate for new building tenants until decommissioned in 2004.

The building has undergone a massive restoration and reopened as the Charles H. Shaw Technology and Learning Center, home of Power House High.Chicago Tribune Architecture Critic Blair Kamin gave the work a resoundingly positive review.

These images were taken prior to the beginning of construction in November and December of 2006. Instead of concentrating on the architecture, as done uncomparably by Darris Lee Harris and Russell Phillips, I was attracted to things in cubby holes and corners.
